lately I’ve been daydreaming of my ideal hotrod. It’s something that will most likely never happen, but man would it be cool.
So here goes. For starters A 66 Dodge D100, longbox. Preferably red with a bit of Patina. Something like this, less the tow mirrors(I think this is actually a D200).
Actually here’s a better pic
I like the two tone on this one
I love he big dopey headlights. It would be on AirRide suspension for driver comfort, and bitchin’ looks. I’d leave the exterior as stock as possible.
I also did the taillights.
So know you thinking “yeah so what’s the big deal, we’ve seen this before.” but here’s the twist. For the rumble under the hood, instead of a 440, or 426, I’d go with a 5.9 Cummins, followed by a manual transmission because hotrods shouldn’t be automatic.
Now would this work? can this engine even fit in that truck? I have literally no idea, but if this engine can push a 6000lb 4x4 beast of a modern truck, Imagine how much ass it would haul in a oldschool stripped down RWD truck.
Bit I’m 90% sure it wouldn’t fir vertically. :(
I mean just look at it

They’re doing something similar on Hot Rod Garage on the Motor Trend Channel. The older truck was a 70s one though iirc.

A 12V would be a pretty easy swap, since there are less than three wires to get it to run. You’d definitely have to beef up the frame though.

Indeed...your comment made me looking this a bit more. Holy Shit. The 12v weights a whopping 1,100 lbs, with fluids in it.

Oh yeah, it’s a hoss. The 3.9 4BT weighs nearly 800 lol.

Could have something to do with this “cast iron” stuff it’s made of. Never seen that before.~Honda guy
Also the little 1.9l ALH from the early 2000’s TDI weighs about 365lbs, and it’s teeny tiny.

That is a truck that begs for the two tone paint I think.
Personally if I were going to build up an old truck I’d go for a Studebaker Champ with the narrow bed. It might even have a tall enough hood for that engine too.

Totally worth it though.

My grandfather had a ‘64 which later fell to my parents. The scar on the back of my right hand is from removing the flywheel from that thing’s engine which was a 318. Not exactly a power house, but with its gearing it was enough.

I approve of this plan!

I am doing something very similar with a 1986 Dodge D150. It is blue two tone with amazing patina. I am planning to switch to air bags for ride quality as well, but throw in a stroked Magnum 5.9 instead. the engine will hopefully be next years project.

Awesome that was the Durango R/T’s engine right?

It was in the Dakota R/T, Ram and even the Grand Cherokee for a year. There are plenty out there for not alot of cash.
